studies on the elements, principles, and colors of art

A study on the principles of art: balance, dominance, movement, and proportion / unity and variance. I created one example of each of four first principles, paired in two separate cases with unity and variance. For the overarching theme, I chose to depict songs from one of my favorite musical artists, The Strokes. By interpreting lyrical suggestions, both literally and figuratively, I created 5" by 5" compositions that illustrate each of the four designated principle of art. From left to right: "Life is Simple in the Moonlight", "Juicebox", "Machu Picchu", "Heart in a Cage", "Electricityscape", "Ize of the World", "One Way Trigger", and "Chances". Materials used include Photoshop, colored pencil, sharpie, micron pen and acrylic paint.

A study on the elements of art: line, space, texture, shape, and value. I created two examples of each of these elements on 5" by 5" squares of vellum paper, and used the theme "Guitar" as an overarching scheme. Materials used include sharpie, micron pen, acrylic paint, Photoshop, collage paper, sheet music, and super glue.

A study on color: cool, warm, triadic, analogous, complementary, earth tones, etc. I chose certain color schemes to focus on by manipulating a photograph I took of a fire hydrant, in order to speak towards the social issue surrounding police force controversy that occurs sporadically throughout the United States. I painted the cool color and warm color 5" by 7" rectangles with acrylic paint and used Illustrator live paint to create the earth tones and triadic sets. Finally, I manipulated part of the image (the hydrant and chain) by utilizing the pen tool and live paint tools.
